Four people, including a police officer and three civilians, were killed in a lengthy gun battle in Jersey City Tuesday, CBS New York reported.

The two suspects in shooting were also killed, the report said. Their bodies were found in a kosher grocery store at Martin Luther King Boulevard after an intense shootout with police.

The incident began at the Bay View cemetery. Sources told CBS the suspects were spotted at the cemetery in a rental van. Officers recognized them as being wanted for questioning in a previous homicide, sources said. The two suspects then opened fire and drove about a mile to the grocery store, where a massive gun battle took place in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

One officer was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. Three other police officers were wounded, including one who was shot in the shoulder, said Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop.

The other two were treated for shrapnel injuries. A civilian was also injured.

Jersey City Director of Public Safety James Shea initially said there was no indication the incident was terror-related, but Fulop tweeted on Tuesday evening that the shooters may have targeted the kosher market.

"Based on our initial investigation (which is ongoing) we now believe the active shooters targeted the location they attacked. Due to an excess of caution the community may see additional police resources in the days/weeks ahead. We have no indication there are any further threats," he wrote.

In another tweet, Fulop wrote, "We have been in close contact with the Jewish community in Jersey City to help where we can. While we work through details/investigation of today’s incident I know the entire Jersey City community stands together with the Jewish Community during these challenging times."

Schools in the area were placed on lockdown during the shootout. The lockdown was lifted at 4:15 p.m.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy stated: "I have been briefed on the unfolding situation in Jersey City. Our thoughts and prayers are with the men and women of the Jersey City Police Department, especially with the officers shot during this standoff, and with the residents and schoolchildren currently under lockdown. I have every confidence in our law enforcement professionals to ensure the safety of the community and resolve this situation. Today reminds us of their bravery and the sacrifices they, and their families, make for our communities."

Two shooters, a male and a female, have been killed. A third suspect is reportedly still on the loose.

Israeli Consul in New York Dani Dayan responded to the shootout.

"According to senior sources I spoke to minutes ago, the feeling is that the incident in Jersey City was not a terrorist event or a hate crime. However, the event is not over yet, the situation is fluid and as at this stage it is only a suspicion," Dayan tweeted.

Rabbi Moshe Schapiro, a Chabad rabbi in New Jersey, told Channel 13 News, "One of the shooters entered the store and fired from there. At the moment it is not entirely clear what exactly happened, but we hope and pray that it will end soon without casualties."

US President Donald Trump commented on the shooting in Jersey City.

"Just received a briefing on the horrific shootout that took place in Jersey City, NJ. Our thoughts & prayers are w/ the victims & their families during this very difficult & tragic time. We will continue to monitor the situation as we assist local & state officials on the ground," he tweeted.
